General Motors rolls out Google Gemini to tens of thousands of vehicles in MENA

Editors Team

General Motors (GM) has officially announced the implementation of Google Gemini across tens of thousands of fleet vehicles operating in the Middle East. The deployment delivers a more natural, helpful, and intuitive in-vehicle artificial intelligence ecosystem localized completely in English and Arabic. The launch represents an early technical foundation building toward GM’s broader, long-term AI strategy previewed during the GM Forward conference—introducing Google Gemini today, while paving the way for a deeply integrated, native GM AI environment run via OnStar in the future.

The intelligent integration is initializing immediately for eligible 2025 and newer Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles outfitted with Google built-in software platforms across Middle Eastern territories. Delivered seamlessly via over-the-air updates spanning a multi-month window, vehicle owners will receive an automated pop-up notification on their primary infotainment dashboard screens when the Gemini engine is ready for deployment in their specific vehicle.

“Gemini delivers AI assistance to drivers across every segment and price point for a wide range of everyday needs. That kind of scale is only possible because of the connected vehicle foundation GM has built through OnStar over the past 30 years,” stated Tim Twerdahl, Global Vice President of Product Management at General Motors. Utilizing the vehicle’s operating software paired with OnStar connectivity to extract high-fidelity data, the system transitions customers past the constraints of legacy Google Assistant toward a smarter, highly responsive machine interface that continuously improves over time.

Through Gemini, GM drivers can communicate with their vehicles without having to memorize rigid, pre-set audio prompts or repeat commands. The localized generative AI layer enables drivers to execute complex verbal operations, including:

  • Summarizing long strings of incoming text messages and drafting accurate contextual replies.
  • Executing text translation protocols prior to transmission and altering the tone or personality of a message.
  • Constructing instant road trip music playlists or requesting podcast recommendations calculated to precisely match the remaining drive time.
  • Brainstorming vacation parameters and sorting out everyday logistical checklists hands-free.

A defining feature of the upgrade is its ability to handle continuous, fluid conversations. Sando-bagging standard voice limitations, drivers can voice an initial navigation target and subsequently refine the trip via follow-up inputs without rebooting the query log. For example, a driver can locate the closest refueling station, command the system to inject a coffee shop stop along the trajectory, and then filter for a restaurant location that requires only a minimal detour from the primary route.

To use the system, owners need to confirm an active OnStar subscription link, log into the Google Play Store on their dashboard console, and opt-in to the Gemini terms, initializing the tool simply by stating, Hey Google.
