Sony introduces the new FX5 camera to its Cinema Line
Sony has officially expanded its acclaimed Cinema Line ecosystem with the launch of the FX5. Built around a newly developed full-frame fully stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS image sensor, the compact camera fuses high-grade cinematic performance with ultra-portable mobility, making it a powerful solution for guerrilla filmmaking and high-end solo productions.
The FX5 is powered by Sony’s latest BIONZ XR2™ processing engine paired with a dedicated AI processing unit. Shooting in S-Log3 yields an impressive 15+ stops of dynamic range, ensuring smooth highlight-to-shadow gradation.
To adapt flexibly to complex lighting conditions, the FX5 implements a Triple Base ISO system featuring native baselines at ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800. For the first time in an FX-series body, the camera supports 3:2 full-sensor Open Gate capture alongside 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm scan modes. Additionally, internal recording in Sony’s proprietary 16-bit X-OCN RAW format is available directly to dual CFexpress Type A / SD slots, leveraging new X-OCN C1 and C2 compressed codecs to drastically reduce file sizes while protecting post-production latitude.
Using deep-learning algorithms, the camera’s AI subject recognition evaluates human pose estimation, tracking eyes, heads, and bodies seamlessly even in low-light environments. For handheld operations, the FX5 incorporates a 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization system enhanced by a new Dynamic Active Mode that doubles the roll correction range relative to previous models.
Production ergonomics are streamlined via a 3.5-type 4-axis multi-angle LCD touchscreen displaying a BIG6 home interface derived from Sony’s CineAlta cinema cameras. A dust and moisture-resistant design coupled with an isolated internal cooling fan ensures long-duration recording reliability.
Sony also revealed two dedicated modular accessories:
- DVF-EL1 OLED Viewfinder: A detachable 0.58-type 7.07-million-dot EVF offering DCI-P3 color reproduction, HDR support, and a 90-degree tilt mechanism.
- XLR-H2 Handle Unit: Equipped with dual XLR/TRS combo terminals, dual AD converters, and support for 4-channel audio recording up to 96 kHz / 32-bit float.
The Sony FX5 will land in the UAE starting August 2026, with a suggested retail price of AED 18,999 for the body only and AED 20,999 for the XLR handle kit.
