Apple announces the AirPods Max 2, the first major update in +5 years
Apple has quietly introduced the AirPods Max 2, marking the first update to its premium over-ear headphones in more than five years. Despite the long gap, the new model keeps the same $549 (AED 2099 in the UAE) price and largely retains the original design, suggesting this is more of a feature and performance upgrade than a full redesign. Pre-orders begin on March 25 across more than 30 countries, with availability starting in early April.
The AirPods Max 2 are powered by Apple’s H2 chip, the same processor used in the latest AirPods Pro, enabling a range of new intelligent features and improvements. Apple claims significantly better Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), with up to 1.5x greater effectiveness than the first-generation model. Transparency mode has also been refined to deliver a more natural and realistic ambient sound experience.

Audio quality also sees meaningful upgrades. The headphones now support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio and ultra-low latency when connected via USB-C, making them more appealing for professionals such as musicians, audio engineers, and content creators. Apple is also pushing its Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, allowing users to create and mix audio in a more immersive way.
A major focus of the update is adaptive and intelligent audio features. Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts between noise cancellation and transparency depending on the environment, while Conversation Awareness lowers playback volume and enhances surrounding voices when the user starts speaking. Voice Isolation improves call clarity by prioritizing the user’s voice over background noise.
One of the standout additions is Live Translation, which enables real-time translated speech through the headphones. However, this feature requires an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and may be limited by language and regional support.
Apple has also added several creator-focused tools, including studio-quality recording, a camera remote function using the Digital Crown, Personalized Volume adjustments, Loud Sound Reduction, and improved wireless latency in Game Mode for supported devices.
Battery life remains unchanged at 20 hours of listening time with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled. The headphones are also slightly heavier than before, now weighing 386.2 grams. Apple continues to include the Smart Case and offers the AirPods Max 2 in five color options: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange.
