Google is quietly rewriting headlines in search with AI

Editors Team

Recent media reports claimed that Google has begun altering news headlines in its search results, replacing them with personalized, AI-generated versions. After previously testing this approach in the Google Discover feed, the company is now experimenting with it in the traditional “ten blue links” format.

According to The Verge, Google’s search engine has shortened some headlines and rewritten others. In some cases, these changes have altered the tone of articles, making them appear more promotional than their authors originally intended. Editors at the publication noted that headlines appearing in Google Search did not reflect their editorial style and were shown to users without any indication that they had been modified.

Google spokespersons told The Verge that the experiment is “limited” and “narrow in scope,” and has not been formally rolled out. However, the exact scale of the test remains unclear. The company also confirmed it is making broader adjustments to how websites appear in search results, with the experiment extending beyond news content alone.

Spokespersons added that the goal is to “identify content on the page and generate titles that are helpful and aligned with user queries,” to improve engagement with web content. They emphasized that the initiative is not limited to news articles, but is part of a broader effort to refine how headlines are presented. Google also confirmed that generative AI is being used in the process.

The company says the experiment is one of tens of thousands it conducts on search traffic to evaluate potential improvements. Still, the use of AI to rewrite headlines has sparked debate, particularly as the new titles may be misleading and could impact the credibility and reputation of news publishers.
