X limits Grok image creation to paid subscribers
X restricted Grok’s image generation and image editing tools to paid subscribers, after the feature was used to create sexually explicit and non-consensual images, including content involving minors.
Users attempting to generate or edit images through Grok on X began receiving a message that these features were available only to paying subscribers. The change followed a period in which image creation on X had been available more broadly with daily limits.
The restriction applies to Grok inside X, while image generation remained accessible through the standalone Grok app and Grok’s website at the time the change rolled out.
The update means most users on X can no longer generate images through Grok unless they move to a paid tier. Paid access also creates a clearer account trail for enforcement and user identification when the tool is misused, since subscriptions are tied to verified billing and account records.
The restrictions were introduced as scrutiny increased around generative tools that can be prompted to alter real photos, including requests to remove clothing, change a person’s appearance, or place them in explicit situations without consent.
The move did not change access to other parts of Grok, including text-based use on X, and it did not remove image generation capability from the standalone Grok experience.
