Making sure it continues to work reliably for years is an entirely different challenge. For manufacturers developing industrial and embedded systems, the journey from a successful prototype to full-scale production is rarely straightforward. Decisions made early in the design process can have lasting consequences, particularly when a product is expected to remain operational long after newer technologies have entered the market.

Choosing the right memory and storage components is one such decision. Beyond immediate performance requirements, engineers must consider how these components will behave under real operating conditions, whether their configurations will remain consistent and how their availability can be maintained throughout the product’s lifecycle.

A device that performs flawlessly in a laboratory may behave differently when exposed to continuous vibration, extreme temperatures, or fluctuating humidity. Industrial equipment may operate around the clock in demanding environments, while medical and aerospace applications often have stringent reliability requirements. Component qualification must therefore reflect the conditions a product will encounter, assessing performance, data integrity, and resilience to environmental and electrical stress.

What works perfectly in a lab does not always tell the full story. Once a device is operating in the real world, conditions can be very different. That is why it’s important to identify potential weaknesses early, when there’s still time to address them without disrupting production.

Endurance is another critical consideration, particularly for storage technologies handling frequent data writes. NAND flash-based devices, including SSDs and eMMC, have finite program/erase cycles, meaning their lifespan depends partly on usage patterns. An industrial monitoring system that continuously records operational data, for example, places different demands on storage than a device that only occasionally updates information.

Engineers should therefore evaluate write frequency, data retention requirements, and expected operating hours. Simulating sustained write activity and continuous operation can help identify potential wear-related limitations before they affect deployed systems, reducing the likelihood of unexpected failures.

Yet technical reliability alone does not guarantee a smooth transition into production. Component consistency can become a challenge when memory chips, storage controllers, or firmware are updated over time. While such changes are common in consumer electronics, they may affect previously validated embedded configurations and require additional qualification.

Maintaining a controlled Bill of Materials (BOM) helps address this risk by keeping critical components, including DRAM revisions, NAND flash, and SSD controllers, consistent across production batches. Controlled SSD firmware provides similar stability, allowing manufacturers to maintain validated configurations without repeatedly testing components whenever new shipments arrive.

Long-term availability presents another challenge. Embedded systems often remain in production or service beyond the commercial lifecycle of their original components. Unexpected discontinuations can force manufacturers to qualify alternatives, redesign systems, or adjust production schedules, potentially creating costs far greater than the savings achieved through initial component selection.

For this reason, supply continuity should be considered alongside technical performance. Visibility into supplier roadmaps, including planning horizons of up to eight quarters, helps manufacturers anticipate product transitions. Regular demand forecasts, ideally updated monthly, also support procurement planning, particularly for embedded components supplied through build-to-order programmes.

Clear communication between suppliers and manufacturers is equally important. Part Change Notifications, End-of-Life announcements, and Last Time Buy opportunities give engineering and procurement teams time to prepare for component transitions. Where applicable, a 90-day advance notification period can help manufacturers assess alternatives, complete additional qualification, or secure remaining production requirements.

Ultimately, moving from prototype to production requires manufacturers to think beyond immediate performance requirements. Engineers should consider component qualification, endurance, consistency, and long-term availability from the earliest design stages, rather than addressing these challenges once production is underway. Taking a more proactive approach, supported by realistic testing and close collaboration with component suppliers, can help reduce unexpected disruptions and support more predictable product lifecycles. After all, the goal is not simply to bring a successful product to market, but to ensure it remains reliable and supportable for years to come.

Guest article by Khalil Yazbeck, Business Development Manager – UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman at Kingston Technology.
