These systems don’t just process information. They sense what’s happening around them, decide what to do, and act accordingly.

Beyond the Digital World

Intel believes this is where AI could have its biggest impact. While most people associate AI with chatbots and digital assistants, the company argued that those applications represent only a small fraction of the world’s operations. It pointed to manufacturing, industrial robotics, vehicles, and the automotive industry as examples of where Physical AI could expand AI’s reach beyond software.

Intel breaks Physical AI into three simple steps: sense, plan, and act. It first understands its environment using cameras, sensors, or other inputs. It then determines the best course of action based on that information before carrying out the task, whether that’s moving, picking up an object, or navigating through a space.

Why Smaller Models Matter

Intel also stressed that bigger AI models aren’t always better for Physical AI. Instead, the company argued that smaller, more efficient models are often the better choice for robots and other physical systems. Rather than relying on massive general-purpose models, these are designed to perform specific tasks efficiently, making them better suited to real-world applications where speed, responsiveness, and hardware limitations matter.

To make this possible, Intel says Physical AI combines different AI capabilities, including computer vision, language understanding, motion planning, and decision-making. Together, these enable machines to understand their surroundings before taking action.

Physical AI is still in its early stages, but the idea is straightforward. Instead of limiting AI to software, the goal is to bring it into machines that can understand and interact with the physical world. If that vision becomes reality, AI won’t just exist inside our computers. It will increasingly become part of the places where we work, travel, shop, and receive care.

For the past few years, AI has mostly lived on our screens.
