The California Highway Patrol said the vehicle left the roadway, struck a concrete barrier, and caught fire; authorities did not immediately identify the victims publicly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"910\">Zampella was best known for co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002 and helping launch <em data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"731\">Call of Duty<\/em> in 2003, a series that grew into one of gaming\u2019s biggest franchises. <em data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"815\">Call of Duty<\/em> has sold more than 500 million copies over its lifetime.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"1143\">After leaving Activision, he went on to co-found Respawn Entertainment in 2010, the studio behind <em data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1021\">Titanfall<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1023\" data-end=\"1037\">Apex Legends<\/em>, and the <em data-start=\"1047\" data-end=\"1063\">Star Wars Jedi<\/em> games, before Respawn was acquired by EA.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1145\" data-end=\"1352\">EA described Zampella\u2019s death as a major loss for the industry, highlighting his role in building teams and creating games that influenced millions of players worldwide.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1354\" data-end=\"1579\">His death comes as the Gulf continues to scale investments in gaming and esports, including Saudi Arabia\u2019s push to grow the sector through Public Investment Fund-backed Savvy Games Group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vince Zampella, the video game developer who helped shape modern first-person shooters and co-created the Call of Duty franchise, has died in a car crash in California at the age of 55.
