As an addition to Dubai’s already advanced traffic infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the new smart V2X traffic system. When implemented, the system will connect traffic signals directly to supported vehicles.<\/p>\n
V2X is set to be implemented at approximately 620 intersections and traffic lights between 2027 and 2028. It will then transmit real-time data and information gathered from traffic infrastructure to vehicle dashboards.<\/p>\n
The system will provide real-time information directly to vehicles. The shared data will include: remaining green-light time, red-light countdowns, signal statuses at upcoming intersections, optimal crossing speeds, congestion alerts, detours, closures, and accident reports, among other things. Additionally, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication will be introduced later to enhance the system.<\/p>\n
Apparently, the RTA is already working with car manufacturers to equip new vehicles with built-in smart connectivity features. However, these features won\u2019t be exclusive to new cars, as existing vehicles will be compatible through an add-on device or via CarPlay and Android Auto in cars that support them. The system will display live traffic data on the vehicle\u2019s screen, reducing the need to use smartphones.<\/p>\n
According to Engineer Salahuddin Al Marzooqi, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA\u2019s Traffic and Roads Department, the V2X network will be central to Dubai\u2019s next-generation traffic signal system. This system, integrated into the Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems Centre (DITSC), will employ AI to enhance signal performance and optimize traffic flow throughout the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThe main goal is to reduce driver distraction from mobile phones by integrating all essential traffic information into the vehicle dashboard, thereby improving safety and preventing accidents.\u201d Al Marzooqi added that the platform supports multi-modal mobility, enabling data exchange between vehicles and connected infrastructure through ITS-C interactive technology. Built on digital twin principles, it will allow RTA to simulate traffic scenarios, analyze intersections, and test operational decisions before real-world implementation.<\/p>\n
This new initiative aims to implement AI across Dubai\u2019s 620 signalized intersections to improve traffic management as the city continues to grow rapidly. This technology could reduce congestion and accidents while enhancing safety and experiences for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.<\/p>\n
