Nintendo’s new Switch 2 has broken company sales records, surpassing its predecessor.

⬤ 3.5 million units were sold within the first four days of release, while the original Switch sold 152 million units over eight years.

⬤ The new console comes at a higher price but offers a larger, higher-resolution screen and noticeably stronger hardware.

Nintendo announced on Wednesday that it sold more than 3.5 million units of its Switch 2 within just four days of launch, making it the fastest-selling gaming console in the company’s history.

The Kyoto-based company had projected last month that Switch 2 sales would reach 15 million units in the current fiscal year ending next March. However, early demand for the highly anticipated console has clearly exceeded expectations.

Doug Bowser, President and COO of Nintendo of America, said in a statement to the media: “Fans around the world are showing their excitement for the Nintendo Switch 2 as an enhanced way to play both at home and on the go.”

Nintendo has sold 152 million units of the original Switch across all its variations since its debut in 2017, making it one of the best-selling gaming consoles in history. Analysts even suggest it could overtake the legendary PlayStation 2’s record, despite the release of this new version.

The Switch 2 is not considered a major overhaul by gamers, as it keeps the same overall design while being larger and more powerful. It supports all previous Switch titles, offering higher resolution gameplay at 1080p instead of 720p. Still, some analysts had feared that its higher 450-dollar price point, compared to the original’s 300-dollar launch price, might affect its market reception.

The original Nintendo Switch marked a major shift in the company’s strategy after the poor performance of the Wii U. Nintendo unified its previously separate console and handheld development teams, creating a hybrid system that successfully combined both gaming experiences.

Today, Nintendo stands as one of the three major console manufacturers alongside Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox. Yet it has maintained a distinct identity by focusing on its own first-party games, which continue to drive massive demand, especially beloved franchises like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokémon.
