PlayStation 6 now expected in 2029, RAM shortage to blame — Report

According to recent reports, Sony is weighing delaying the launch of its next flagship gaming console, the PlayStation 6. The device was reportedly scheduled to debut in 2027, but it’s now being pushed back to 2028 or even 2029.

The suspected culprit is the ongoing memory shortage that continues to disrupt the hardware sector. At the same time, gamers looking to purchase the Switch 2 this year may face higher prices, with Nintendo reportedly preparing a price increase for its latest handheld console.

Analysts and industry sources have recently suggested that the AI-driven surge in memory demand is affecting next-generation console timelines. Bloomberg has echoed those claims, reporting that Sony is unlikely to release the PlayStation 6 next year, thereby breaking the 6-7-year update cycle. On the other hand, reports indicate Microsoft remains on schedule to release its next Xbox in 2027.

According to the report, which cites people familiar with Sony’s plans, rising costs for memory and storage components are expected to push the PS5 successor beyond its anticipated 2027 release window. Limited availability of key parts for consumer devices has also reportedly prompted other electronics manufacturers to revise their product roadmaps.

Bloomberg also reported that Nintendo intends to raise the price of the Switch 2 in the near future. The hybrid console was already criticized for being significantly more expensive than its predecessor.

A price increase for the Switch 2 would likely disappoint consumers, though it may not come as a surprise. In November 2025, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the company did not plan to raise the Switch 2’s price in 2026, provided it was not forced to contend with inflationary pressures stemming from tariffs or rising component costs.

Recent reports indicate that the PS6 could feature 30GB of GDDR7 memory with a bandwidth of 640 GB/s. A potential PS6 handheld model may include 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Both devices are expected to run on AMD processors, with Sony reportedly collaborating with the chipmaker to develop custom system-on-chip designs.
