Meta signs nuclear power deals totaling 6.6 gigawatts by 2035

Meta Platforms signed a set of nuclear energy agreements in the United States that cover both existing power plants and new reactor development, targeting up to 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear electricity by 2035 to support growing data center demand tied to artificial intelligence.

The package includes 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) connected to three Vistra nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The contracted supply covers operating output and additional capacity tied to equipment upgrades that raise generation, known as uprates. Vistra listed 2,176 megawatts (MW) of operating generation plus 433 MW of uprate capacity across the Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio and the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania. Purchases under the agreements are scheduled to begin in late 2026, with the full 2,609 MW expected to be online by 2034.

The plants will continue delivering electricity into the PJM grid region, with the added uprate capacity expected to come online in the early 2030s. Vistra also tied the agreements to plans for subsequent license extensions at all three plants. Vistra listed current license timelines that include Beaver Valley Unit 1 through 2036, Davis-Besse through 2037, Perry through 2046, and Beaver Valley Unit 2 through 2047.

The broader package also includes development support for small modular reactors (SMRs) and other advanced nuclear projects. TerraPower’s work includes two Natrium units capable of generating up to 690 MW with delivery as early as 2032, plus rights tied to up to six additional Natrium units capable of producing 2.1 gigawatts targeted by 2035.

Oklo’s work focuses on an advanced nuclear technology campus in Pike County, Ohio, with up to 1.2 gigawatts that may come online as early as 2030.

The agreements follow an earlier 20-year nuclear-related deal tied to the Clinton, Illinois plant through Constellation Energy.
