⬤ MRI machines are powerful enough to attract a tank, and this is not the first fatal accident of its kind.

A 61-year-old man in New York has died after being pulled by his metal necklace into an active MRI machine. Authorities believe the man accidentally entered the scanning room while another patient was undergoing imaging at the medical center.

According to a police statement published online, the necklace was described as a large metal chain. The report said, “Based on investigations, officers responded to a 911 medical emergency call at Nassau Open MRI. Upon arrival, they were informed that a 61-year-old man had entered the MRI scanning room without authorization while the machine was in operation.”

The statement continued, “The man was wearing a large metal chain around his neck, which caused him to be pulled into the device, leading to a medical emergency. Police responded quickly and transported the injured man to a nearby hospital, but he passed away shortly afterward due to his injuries.”

MRI machines are among the most advanced medical imaging devices in use today. They provide highly detailed images of the human body and are essential for diagnosing a wide range of health conditions. To operate, these machines rely on extremely strong electromagnets, which is why most metal objects are strictly prohibited near them.

Inside MRI rooms, almost all objects, including electronic devices, are banned because they can interfere with the machine or, in the worst cases, cause serious injury. Considering that the MRI was powerful enough to pull a person by a necklace from across the room, the potential danger of these machines, which can attract objects as heavy as tanks, is clear.

Before any MRI scan, patients are repeatedly asked if they have any metallic objects on or inside their bodies. Over the years, several tragic accidents have occurred when this rule was ignored, though such incidents usually involve patients inside the scanner, not bystanders entering by mistake.

The magnetic force generated by MRI machines is incredibly strong. Some units are powerful enough to pull in a tank, meaning that even small metal objects nearby can lead to serious or fatal accidents.
