The world of mobility is changing fast as electric cars, smarter networks, and cleaner energy become part of everyday life. People want technology that feels personal, cities want solutions that make life easier, and companies are racing to build the next generation of sustainable transportation.

One notable player in this field is BYD, the Chinese EV maker that grew to become the largest EV maker in the world. At an industry event, we had the opportunity to speak with Stella Li, EVP of BYD Company and President of BYD Americas. She shared with us her outlook on the industry as a whole and outlined the company’s strategy for continuous growth.

How do you adjust to challenges like heat and infrastructure in the Middle East?

Every region varies, and success relies on your ability to adapt. In the Middle East, we are deploying two essential technologies tailored to local needs.

The first is our flash charging system. It can add up to 400 kilometers in just five minutes, making it as quick as refueling. We’re setting up the first flash charging station outside China right here in Dubai, and it will revolutionize how people see electric driving.

The second is our DMO platform. It combines off-road capability with city comfort while remaining efficient in extreme heat. It is designed for the region’s lifestyle, offering drivers both power and luxury in one vehicle.

We do not expect markets to adapt to us. We adapt to them. That is the true key to sustainable innovation.

How does vertical integration give you an edge over competitors?

It keeps us strong, fast, and efficient. BYD builds its own batteries, motors, chips, and control systems. This means outside suppliers or global shortages do not limit us.

When other manufacturers faced production delays, we continued to move forward. Controlling our supply chain enables us to innovate quickly, maintain consistent quality, and deliver on time. It also helps us lower costs and bring new technology to a wider audience.

Vertical integration grants us freedom. We can respond quickly to the market, scale production when necessary, and explore new ideas without delay. That is how we stay ahead.

We do not expect markets to adapt to us. We adapt to them.

Which technologies will shape the future of mobility?

Electrification and autonomous driving are the two major developments. Electrification helps clean up cities and cut emissions. Autonomous driving will alter how we think about time and safety.

Cars will soon be able to make smart decisions on their own, helping drivers relax or pay attention to other things. This will improve safety and make travel more enjoyable.

At BYD, we are developing advanced sensors and AI systems to enable this. We aim for cars to communicate with cities, energy grids, and each other to build a seamless mobility ecosystem.

What advice would you give to young women entering the tech or automotive industries?

The most important thing is to love what you do. Passion provides you with strength and motivation. If you enjoy your work, every challenge becomes an opportunity to grow.

Next is confidence. Trust in your abilities and don’t wait for approval to lead. Confidence builds credibility and opens doors.

Be patient and stay persistent. Success requires time, and steady progress comes from consistency. Learn from setbacks and continue to improve.

Finally, stay curious. Technology never stops evolving, and curiosity fuels your creativity. Women bring a unique blend of logic and empathy that makes technology more relatable. The more diverse the industry becomes, the stronger it will be.
