Automatic chat translation is coming soon to Whatsapp on iPhone

Editors Team

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new feature on iPhones designed to make communication easier between users who speak different languages by automatically translating messages in chats without requiring manual input.

According to information from the app’s beta versions, as reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on adding a new option called “Translate Messages,” which can be enabled on a per-chat basis. Once activated, incoming messages will be automatically translated into the user’s selected language.

Users will be able to choose both the original language of incoming messages and the target language for translation. Translations will appear instantly upon message arrival, without requiring users to tap the message or take additional steps.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to translate messages individually by long-pressing a message and selecting the “Translate” option. While this method provides full control over the translation process, it can be impractical when handling a large number of messages or lengthy conversations. The new feature aims to address this limitation by enabling continuous, automatic translation within chats, making it easier and faster to follow discussions across different languages.

The feature relies on iOS language packs, meaning translations are processed directly on the device without sending messages to external servers. This approach preserves WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption, ensuring that conversations remain private and secure. Users will need to download the required language packs in advance, so translations work even without an internet connection.

The feature is still under testing in WhatsApp’s iOS beta versions, and the company has not yet announced an official timeline for its public release. At launch, it is expected to support translation in 21 languages, including Arabic, English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. Support is likely to expand in the future as Apple adds more languages to its translation system.

Automatic translation will be available in both individual and group chats. However, in group chats, it will only function when all participants use the same language. If a participant sends a message in a different language, it will not be translated automatically.
